Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) holds a unique place in New Mexico’s higher education landscape—both the state’s oldest two-year college and its newest independent community college.

Situation

Establishing a New Independent Institution Through Strategic Technology Partnership

After nearly 60 years as a branch campus of New Mexico State University–Carlsbad, the Carlsbad community voted overwhelmingly to establish SENMC as a standalone institution.

The operational realities of independence presented significant challenges. SENMC needed to rapidly stand up a fully independent technology ecosystem—including network infrastructure, academic technology, cybersecurity, and an enterprise resource planning/student information system (ERP/SIS)—all while meeting strict regulatory and accreditation requirements from the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED), the Higher Learning Commission, and state administrative code.

Compounding the challenge was the absence of a robust internal IT department. With limited local technology resources and no existing independent infrastructure, SENMC required immediate leadership, execution, and long-term strategy to ensure continuity, compliance, and institutional stability..

Ferrilli supported SENMC across every critical area required to operate as an independent institution:
